One of my earliest memories is of her singing “Somewhere Out There” from An American Tale to me in my crib. I started to gravitate towards the rhythmic aspect of music in my pre-teens and began persistently signaling to my parents that I wanted to play drums. I started playing drums just after my 13th birthday. My first drum teacher was Scott Mort, who still is teaching in the Western PA area. He helped provide me with a very solid foundation and continued to inspire me to develop my ear through active listening training. His background as a funk and rock drummer helped inform my sensibilities that are still present to this day. Playing the drums quickly became a powerful meditation for me and a path towards self-discovery. I found that no matter what challenges life brought my way, the drums were always there for me. I immediately started playing in bands and learned most of what I know about drums through the direct experience of playing with other musicians. I got involved in the vibrant local music scene of Johnstown, PA shortly thereafter. Being a part of this music scene was a feeling of coming home. Playing drums and connecting with the local music scene became a solid foundation for my relationship with the drums. I then moved to Nashville in 2007 to go to university and ended up steeped in the underground scene there. I played in many different projects, mostly under the umbrella of rock, metal, and experimental genres. I toured the US and even got to record with Jack White at his home studio for a band I was in at the time. By 2013 I was called to the PNW and moved to Portland, OR. Here I continued to play drums solo and was also part of a metal band. I discovered the art of tea and worked at two prominent teahouses in the city. I met my partner in 2015 through working for the same tea company. We eventually moved up to Bellingham in 2018. Over the past several years, I’ve focused on my personal relationship with the drums and started recording remotely for artists, both domestic and internationally. I regularly create drum content that I post on social media. I also have been working on my own solo project. My obsession for the drums has only deepened over the past several years. I have a passion for providing inspiration, particularly for young and up-and-coming drummers, neurodivergent folks, and those who have always wanted to explore the drums and are now wanting to begin their journey. Most recently I’ve been in SEP training, currently at the intermediate level, and I weave in somatic experiencing to aid in supporting drummers in how they express themselves through their body and drums. Recently, I’ve been diving into Indian music and rhythms and am currently learning to play the dholki, a North Indian double-sided hand drum as well as crafting rhythms that serve as a pulse that supports shamanic journeying, meditation, and healing I look forward to sharing this passion of all things drum and rhythm with you! His skills were developed in one of Marysville, Washington’s taxpayer funded arts programs, Concert Band. He learned the Euphonium and occasionally tickled the forbidden band hall piano. He was excited about The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. or as he now generalizes it, Boomer Rock. These bands inspired him to learn the basics of song composition, digital audio recording and the electric bass guitar. He recorded his first EP of 8 songs before graduating High School. On this EP, he gathered enough knowledge to record several instruments. This personal accomplishment sparked an overarching passion for learning how to learn, anything. After graduating in 2006, he landed a role as a Euphoniumist in the USMC Band, and was sent to 29 Palms, CA. In the Marine band, music wasn’t always fun, so John sought out musical outlets in nearby Joshua Tree and found a weekly open mic at the Beatnik Cafe. The cafe proved to be a fertile venue for the songwriting spud growing inside of him. In 2010, John’s active service came to an end. He moved back to WA to start a band with old friends and record music. His goal for 2020, before COVID-19, was to play a role in five different bands. He still records music on his own and with members of his before times group, the Band Van Dog. Performed throughout his youth as a drummer in punk rock bands lead him to a newly inspired pursuit of the guitar exploring many genres including progressive metal, percussive acoustic, jazz fusion, and classical guitar. Jacob obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance with early-music specialist, Dr. Jeffery Noonan. He then pursued his Master of Music degree under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Bolshoy. In these seven years, Jacob studied and performed a diversely cultured repertoire ranging from the 16th to 21st century as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral feature artist. Following his academic career, composition, production, touring and volunteering as the Director of Public Relations for the Canada International Arts and Music Society (CIAMS) filled Jacob’s schedule. During his two years at CIAMS, the grassroots nonprofit produced Vancouver BC’s first ever international music competition, accepting hundreds of applicants from around the world and financial support from both local and federal government. Jacob has produced and released three studio albums of solo fingerstyle guitar music, each with considerable acclaim. His progressive style of guitar composition was awarded 2nd Prize in the Russian composition competition, "The Time of The Guitar International", where his piece, "Relictus (En Aethere)" was praised for being "mesmerizing" with "very convincing imagery,” then published with Danish company, Bergmann Edition. Having also been reviewed by Minor 7th Magazine, Az Samad, and inducted into his Alma Mater’s Performing Arts Hall of Fame (2023), Jacob’s work has inspired guitarists and music enthusiasts from around the globe. I spent the last 12 years teaching percussion in Nashville and prior to that, I taught 20 years in the Chicagoland area. My experience teaching Adults, College Students, Middle school and High school students spans over 30 years. I truly love teaching. I have been teaching private lessons for such a long time I feel I could teach anyone how to play a percussion instrument. What I bring to my teaching is more than that. I teach discipline, motivation and respect with an emphasis on listening to my students and practicing patience with them. I have taught many who have gone on to be band directors and performers at a very high level. A much larger percentage of my students have become engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs, factory supervisors, pastors, police, firefighters, and accountants. Most students will see an improvement in their grades while studying with me. My Junior High students have an easier time transitioning to High School and my High School students have an easier time transitioning to college because they have learned in our sessions how to be resourceful and solve problems on their own. Born and based in Bellingham, he is known for his musical versatility and dynamic expression. He performs and enjoys rock, metal, jazz, classical, and theater musics. His percussive instincts certainly annoyed early teachers (they told him), but this natural motivation also compelled him since childhood to drum. Santa Claus delivered his first drum set when he was three years old. Continuing to drum through adolescence at Mount Baker High School, Asa played in the jazz and wind bands and performed with the All-Northwest and SJMEA honor bands. During the summer of 2015, he studied dance, drums, and Chinese in Exeter, New Hampshire at the Phillips Exeter Academy. Asa sang and danced in four school musicals, and outside of school, played in a hardcore punk band, Croak, which performed in Bellingham, Seattle, and Portland. Asa studied percussion performance at Western Washington University with Dr. Patrick Roulet. He played with the WWU symphony orchestra, wind symphony, jazz bands, and percussion ensemble. In the summer of 2017, he enjoyed two weeks of music jamboree as a counselor at the Marrowstone Music Festival, performing works such as The Rite of Spring and Fountains of Rome. During these years, Asa also coached the winter musicals at his alma mater Mount Baker, helping put on the shows High School Musical and Beauty and the Beast. In 2019, he was honored to win the WWU Concerto Competition, which culminated in his performance of Robert Jager’s Concerto for Percussion accompanied by the WWU symphony orchestra. The capstone of his college experience was a tour of Spain with the WWU percussion ensemble, where he performed a world premier of The Twelve Labors of Hercules by Michael Udow in the town of Llíria. Since graduating, Asa continues to perform in town as a member of the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra, as well as in the pit orchestra with the Bellingham Theatre Guild. He performs jazz locally with his group The Other Thing. He has recorded with the indie rock band Apology Wars and progressive metal group Thoughts for the Builders. Outside of music, he enjoys rockhounding the Nooksack River and playing games of Halo. It became such a passion that by the time he’d turned 15, he was hired by a regional artist to join a group performing Paul Simon songs at a local theater. The catalog and range of material required him to study and learn some of the most iconic grooves in drumming history, including several beats by the great Steve Gadd, which in turn set the standard for Jason’s musical and professional goals. In 1992, he began studying privately at The Seattle Drum School of Music and one year later, started taking his own students to carry on as a member of the SDS teaching staff for the next decade. He has been a member of Death Cab for Cutie since 2002, internationally touring some of the worlds greatest venues while receiving 9 Grammy nominations along the way. With a vested interest in recording, engineering, session and programming experience, he owns a studio and has contributed to the catalogs of such artists as Tegan & Sara, Matt Nathanson, Chance the Rapper, Fences and several others. As a private teacher and clinician over the past 25 years, he’s been featured in several publications, including Modern Drummer, Drumhead, Drum, Rhythm Magazine and even the New York Times. He’s performed at the Modern Drummer Festival, PASIC, and given several master classes at premiere drum shops and music schools around the country. Thereafter his appetite for plucking strings became insatiable, and every instrument he found became a new vessel to chase the trance and follow the feeling he got in that dream. He got himself a washboard and formed a jug band. He got a guitar and started teaching himself the esoteric music of John Fahey. Around the same time, he started digging into the roots of the roots music, amassing a large collection of dusty old recordings, publishing a blog and compiling a 6-cd set of the Roots of John Fahey. He got a banjo the night before journeying to Ireland and a few thousand hours of solitude later he'd gathered a basketful of tunes on the banjo ranging from old-time mountain music to klezmer waltzes to 17th century Irish harp pieces to new-fangled ragtime jams. He often likes playing slow mysterious tunes even more than the fast frolicking ones. After years of walking through antique stores with thimbles on, tapping on everything in the store, he's outfitted his washboards with an assortment of things that clatter and ding in just the right way. Playing washboard with Hot Damn Scandal since 2012, he has learned how to make the washboard fit into a variety of styles, including americana, blues, jazz, folk, waltzes, circus freakouts, string band funk, and twisted orchestrations with strange time signatures and sudden changes. He also performs as a storyteller with a variety of local musicians, and as a solo musician playing banjo and guitar. He is the director of Majestic Adventures and runs the Adventure Quest summer camps, birthday parties, and after-school programs, and has led thousands of kids on interactive live action roleplaying adventures. My name is William Kovacevic, and I teach trombone here at Bellinghome. I’m currently studying music education and performance at WWU. I first picked up the horn at age 8 in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia and continued to hold it near ever since. I have grown a deep love and appreciation for many different genres and artists through my time spent playing with other musicians. After many years of practice and performance, I have found that one’s ability to play an instrument is only as good as their ability to effectively practice. I emphasize intentional practice techniques and compassion in my lessons. I hope to leave students with instruction on ways to improve, as well as how to actually realize those concepts into their own playing. I know that anyone can find success (and joy!) in the process of learning. Since my freshman year I’ve been playing with Western’s Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony and Big Band I. Nick has taught for 14 years and has been performing professionally for 20. Nick grew up near the beautiful badlands of western North Dakota surrounded by musical families on both sides. His dad took him to watch jazz big bands when he was young and that love of brass and horn sections has stuck with him ever since. A self taught drummer since the age of 10, Nick played in a couple rock bands, played trumpet and tuba, and some bass when he was in high school along with choir. During holidays he would and still does get together with his family to celebrate and play music together. Nick studied jazz guitar under Dan Phillips while earning a bachelors degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead. His concentration was in music industry along with film production. He has been messing around with cameras since he was young filming random things, usually having to do with wildlife, sports, or mountains and nature. The MSUM guitar ensemble, Jarafuho, and the Fillers gave Nick some awesome experiences and great new friendships. They kept him busy performing at local, bars, ski resorts, parties, and the 10,000 Lakes festival near the final years of college. Since graduating from MSUM in 2007 he has fell in love with the Seattle/Bellingham area after moving out here to intern at Victory Studios in the audio post department and also finding a love of teaching snowboarding and skiing at Snoqualmie Pass and Mount Baker. He now shoots professional stills, and time lapse photography and produces live multi camera concert videos whether its audio or video side of things. In 2008 Nick was missing drums after intensely studying music theory and guitar technique at MSUM. Before asking his parents to ship his drums out west he discovered Charlie Hunter and the custom 8 string novax guitar one night at Jazz Alley in Seattle and from then on his musical journey took a direct turn towards learning that instrument. The 8 string guitar also influenced Nick to be more of a bass player than guitar player the last few years. Even more so he became a drummer again, as the 8 string guitar for him is like a drum set made out of a bass and guitar and playing polyrhythms between them is the main focus. You might see him throwing some beatboxing in over the top as he has been making acapella noises from his mouth since 2002. Nick landed in Bellingham after a truck driving hiatus in back home in North Dakota to save some funds as well as revisit what he really wanted to do in the music industry. He came up with a plan to return to school to get an education degree from Western WA University, but instead started to teach independently and Co-own Wild Hare Music School, performing with Snug Harbor as well as truck driving for Lynden Door from 2013 to 2017. After expanding his presence in the Bellingham community and discovering his love of teaching, Nick had an opportunity to start his own music school which opened on March 1st 2017. Bellinghome School of Music offers private and group music lessons as well as performance opportunities and rehearsal space. There are 10 studios with 19 talented teachers and around 140 young talented kiddos as well as several bands keeping Bellinghome a hopping place. It is a musical center and hub of awesome friends, families, and musicians beginner to advanced to professional. One of Chris' favorite recent projects was being the piano player and session leader for a weekly music improv group, creating new songs and arrangements in front of a live audience by tapping into the skills of the musicians present. His favorite piano job was playing two dinners per week at a sushi restaurant in Alaska (yum). He served hospice patients for many years and currently practices privately in Red Wing, MN, where he returned in 2023 after spending several years in Bellingham. David is grateful to Nick Taylor and all of his Bellinghome School of Music colleagues, students, and families for the opportunity to teach multiple instruments at Bellinghome, and to continue to do so virtually after returning to his home state of Minnesota. He is known for his fiery, creative flatpicking on the acoustic guitar and mandolin, passionate vocal performances, and free flowing improvisations.
